Arecibo Observatory

The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope in the municipality of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The telescope, which is 1,000 feet (305 m) in diameter, is used for three major areas of research — radio astronomy, atmospheric science, and radar astronomy. Last year, high winds associated with Hurricane Maria caused a line feed on the telescope to break and fall onto the primary dish, damaging about 30 of its 38,000 aluminum panels.
