Maxar TechnologiesAskja is a caldera located in a remote part of the central highlands of Iceland. Calderas are large, cauldron-like hollows that form after the magma chamber of a volcano is evacuated and the earth above collapses into it. Askja is roughly 2.8 miles (4.5 km) in diameter and is accessible only a few months out of the year — in fact, the region in which it is located is so remote and otherworldly, it was used as a training site for NASA's Apollo program to prepare astronauts for lunar missions.

Maxar TechnologiesA massive bloom of cyanobacteria is seen in the Baltic Sea. In August 2015, a bloom spanning more than 100 square kilometers covered these waters. Cyanobacteria are a type of marine bacteria that capture and store solar energy through photosynthesis. While some are toxic to humans and animals, large blooms can cause an oxygen-depleted dead zone where other organisms cannot survive.
NASALast month, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this amazing Overview of a swirling green phytoplankton bloom in the Baltic Sea. Blooms like this spread across the northern basins of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans every summer, often spanning hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles. Scientists believe these blooms to be cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae — an ancient marine bacteria that captures and stores solar energy through photosynthesis.
NASAThe Bandar Imam Khomeini petrochemical complex is Iran’s largest supplier of petrochemicals for export, generating millions of tons of petroleum-based products every year. Located in Iran’s southwestern Khuzestan Province, the complex is seen in this Overview adjacent to Musa Bay, a shallow estuary that empties into the Persian Gulf.
Maxar TechnologiesCheck out this amazing Overview of the Banks Peninsula, which juts off the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. The landmass, which is volcanic in origin, has an area of roughly 440 square miles (1,150 sq. km) and encompasses two large harbors and many small bays and coves. It is believed that forests once covered 98% of the Banks Peninsula, yet — as the result of deforestation — less than 2% of the native forest cover remains today.
Maxar TechnologiesA residential neighborhood sits adjacent to a large oil refinery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Owned by ExxonMobil, this facility is the fourth largest of its kind in the United States and the 12th largest in the world, with an input capacity of more than 502,000 barrels per day. This refinery is one of many industrial plants along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, an 85-mile stretch known as "Cancer Alley" because of the abundance of cancer cases that have occurred there.
NearmapVivid blue water fills an open-pit mine near the town of Battle Mountain in Lander County, Nevada. Maxar TechnologiesThe Bayannur Wulanyiligeng Wind Farm in Inner Mongolia, China, consists of at least 200 wind turbines and can generate nearly 850,000 megawatt hours (850 billion watt hours) of power per year at full operation. Power from the wind farm is sold to the North China Power Grid to substitute for power generated by thermal power plants, thus reducing carbon emissions. The wind farm has the capacity to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 760,000 tonnes annually.
Maxar TechnologiesBeach Haven West is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Stafford Township, New Jersey. The neighborhood, which has about 3,900 residents, was built upon salt marshes beginning in the 1950s.
